The Withlacoochee River begins near Tifton and Moultrie in Georgia. Portions of the Withlacoochee can be dry due to large sinkholes taking the entire flow of the river for most of the year. The banks are made up of limestone outcrops and there are several small shoals. In Georgia, the river flows through parts of Tift, Cook, Colquitt and Brooks Counties. In Florida it passes through Hamilton and Madison Counties. This river has numerous second magnitude springs along its shores. Recently, US Geological Survey scientists have tracked Gulf Sturgeon to spawning sites in some of the gravelly shoals of the lower Withlacoochee River. The Nature Conservancy has placed the Withlacoochee on a list of “high priority” streams. The Withlacoochee joins the Suwannee River at Suwannee River State Park just west of Live Oak,Florida.
The Withlacoochee River (North) originates in Georgia, northwest of Valdosta. It flows south into Florida, and eventually merges with the Suwannee at Suwannee River State Park west of Live Oak. It is believed to be the source for the name of the central Florida river.
